UN Experts Call for Enhancing the Protection of Persons with Disabilities

A number of independent experts from several United Nations mechanisms*, referring to the first session of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities that convened in Geneva from 23 to 27 February 2009, recalled today that persons with disabilities continue to run an increased risk of falling victim to abuse and neglect in a number of contexts: many are involuntarily confined for long periods, at times without legal basis and proper review mechanisms and in inadequate conditions; inside institutions they are often subjected to restraint, sometimes severe forms of restraint, physical, mental and sexual violence, and seclusion; moreover, persons with disabilities are especially vulnerable to violence and abuse, including sexual abuse, inside the home, at the hands of family members, caregivers, health professionals and members of the community. Finally, they risk being exposed to medical experimentation and intrusive and irreversible medical treatments without their consent.

UN and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Signed the New UNDAF 2010-2015
Today, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Milososki and the UN Resident Coordinator, Maria Luisa Silva Mejias officially signed the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) for the period 2010-2015. As part of the UN Reform Agenda, the UN General Assembly established that all UN agencies with national programmes agree with the respective host country on a single programme framework of cooperation in order to make UN assistance more coherent, effective and relevant to the country development needs.

Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion Visits the Country

From 27 to 29 April 2009 the United Nations Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, Ms Asma Jahangir, conducted a fact-finding visit to the country. Country visits represent a fundamental activity of the Special Rapporteur. She undertakes country visits to get an in-depth understanding of freedom of religion or belief in the specific context and to provide constructive feedback to the given country.
