Since Macedonia gained
independence in 1991 and began the process of political and economic
transition, many Macedonians have experienced a significant decline
in their living standards. The breakdown of social and economic
structures, the increased competition for jobs and the slow economic
recovery and growth has meant that many Macedonians find it increasingly
difficult to make a living.
The Millennium Development
Goals, which the Macedonian government has pledged to reach by signing
the Millennium Declaration in 2000, offer Macedonia an opportunity
to find a path towards long-term development.
