HIV and AIDS

The Country has low HIV prevalence. But, behavioral studies show that some key population groups (injecting drug users, men that have sex with men, sex workers and prisoners) are most at risk of HIV transmission from engaging in high-risk behaviors.

The UN Theme Group on AIDS consists of UNDP, UNICEF, UNHCR, WHO, IOM, UN Women and UNFPA. The UN Supports the Government in the implementation of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy 2007-2011.

The Group produces a bi-annual newsletter with information about the work of the UN and national partners in the field of HIV/AIDS.

Current work:

  • Some of the highlights of the Team’s priorities for the year include:
  • Supporting the Government’s capacities for better evidence-based planning, budgeting and monitoring of preventive programmes;
  • The roll out of integrated Sexual and Reproductive Health and HIV/AIDS counseling centers for young people and vulnerable communities; and
  • Assessing gender related vulnerabilities, barriers and their causes in accessing HIV preventive and treatment services for most-at-risk groups.
