Mandate
UNIFEM provides financial and technical assistance to innovative programmes and strategies to foster women's empowerment and gender equality. Placing the advancement of women's human rights at the centre of all of its efforts, UNIFEM focuses its activities on four strategic areas: (1) reducing feminized poverty, (2) ending violence against women, (3) reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS among women and girls, and (4) achieving gender equality in democratic governance in times of peace as well as war.

UNIFEM is providing support to the country in fulfillment its national and international commitments towards gender equality, including as expressed in the National Action Plan for Gender Equality 2007-2012 and the Convention to Eliminate All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).
Specifically, UNIFEM activities focus on:
Promoting gender responsive budgeting as a tool for advancing gender equality and democratic governance, through provision of technical assistance for integration of gender equality considerations in policy and busget making processes at central and local level. Supporting capacity development and dialogue between government and civil society organizations with aim at enhancing accountability towards gender equality commitments. Supporting women that are subject to exclusion or discrimination and their organizations in claiming their rights and participating meaningfully in decision-making processes. Under the framework of its regional programmes, support for regional dialogue, networking and exchange of best practices and experiences between countries from South East Europe. Participation in joint UN efforts aimed at strengthening national capacities for domestic violence prevention and provision of adequate victim support services.
