International Labour Organization
Mandate
The International Labour Organization (ILO) is the United Nations agency devoted to advancing opportunities for women and men to obtain decent and productive work in conditions of freedom, equity, security and human dignity. Its main aims are to promote rights at work, encourage decent employment opportunities, enhance social protection and strengthen dialogue in handling work-related issues. The ILO is the only “tripartite” United Nations agency in that it brings together representatives of governments, employers and workers to jointly shape policies and programmes. The ILO is the global body responsible for drawing up and overseeing international labour standards.
In the country since: 2009
At a glance:
ILO country office works in close partnership with the Government, trade unions and employers' organizations in order to promote Decent work.
Decent work is the primary goal of the International Labour Organization, as it links supporting the development of productive and competitive enterprises to the most important aspirations of people: a fair income, security at the workplace and social protection for themselves and their families, better prospects for personal development and social integration, freedom for people to express their concerns, organize and participate in the decisions that affect their lives and equality of opportunity and treatment for all women and men.
The ILO's diverse tasks in the country are grouped under four strategic objectives:
- Promote and realize standards and fundamental principles and rights at work
- Create greater opportunities for women and men to secure decent employment and income
- Enhance the coverage and effectiveness of social protection for all
- Strengthen tripartism and social dialogue
