In the country since: 1994 At a glance::
Following country’s acceptance as an UNESCO member in 1993, on 15 March 1994 a National Commission for UNESCO was established as an expert and administrative body that functions in the frames of the Ministry of Culture. The National Commission serves the role of a coordinator between the country and UNESCO in all areas of mandate – science, education, culture, environment, communication and information, human rights, youth and sports.
In mid 2009, UNESCO together with UNDP, UNICEF and national counterparts have started up the implementation of a joint programme titled “Enhancing Inter-ethnic Community Dialogue and Collaboration” with an aim to facilitate the establishment of a functional conflict transformation system in FYR Macedonia by strengthening capacities at local and national levels, as well as promoting multi-cultural civic identity. The Programme works on enhancing the capacity of central and local bodies to facilitate inclusive problem-solving processes and consensus-building around community priorities. It will also aim to strengthen the commitment to an inclusive civic national identity with respect to diversity, to support the longer term role of education, and work with local leaders, civil society and the media to facilitate constructive civic dialogue that promotes inter-cultural awareness and values informing peaceful co-existence.
