United Nations Volunteers
National UNVs
The national United Nations Volunteers (UNVs) concept was developed in the early 1990s as an innovative and experimental approach for promoting national volunteerism and national volunteer contributions to development and humanitarian programmes.
It provided an expanded opportunity for individuals to devote a period of their professional life to serve others without concern for financial gain, which is a key principle of volunteering.
National UN Volunteers have been assigned world-wide to support development, humanitarian and peace-building programmes, with roles ranging from providing technical; skills in the areas of education, health, agriculture and income-generating activities to strengthening local human resources and the linking of community, local government and national policy making levels.
A growing demand for National UN Volunteers from a wide range of partners has led to the implementation of several national UNV initiatives in Africa, Latin America, Caribbean, Asia, Arab States and Eastern Europe.
It is currently in the process of being established in FYR Macedonia as well.

What is it all about?
RIVER SEE represents a unique UNV/UNDP regional collaboration between UNV/UNDP Country Offices/Liaison Office in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, FYR Macedonia, Kosovo, Montenegro and Serbia.
It is co-implemented with partners such as European Union/European Voluntary Service, Voluntary Service Organization UK, South East European Youth Network, OneWorld South East European, 14 prominent Civil Society/Voluntary Organizations, as well as other grassroots organizations from seven countries and areas throughout the Balkans.
Aims and objectives
The programme aims to enhance the capacity of Civil Society/Voluntary Involving Organizations (CSO/VIOs), community groups and individuals, in their management of a vibrant volunteer sector.
The programme also aims to promote regional cooperation as a crucial tool for accelerating democratic and economic development as well as peace building for the region.
Just recently, the programme launched a Web-enabled Multilingual Relational Database (link: www.riversee.org), a website dedicated to East to East Volunteer exchanges in the Balkan region. This database is quipped with a system able to match the needs of Civil Society/Volunteer Involving Organizations with Individual/Volunteer applicant profiles willing to participate in East-to-East regional exchanges.
The database, available in several languages, is accessible to volunteers and organizations, and through web-accounts it offers the possibility for multiple log-ins and constant editing/updating of data.
