Combines the forces of: the United Nations Children’s fund (UNICEF), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), World Health Organization (WHO) and World Bank to fight against the AIDS epidemic

Was since then joined by four additional Cosponsoring Organizations: United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in 1999, International Labour Organization (ILO) in 2001, World Food Programme (WFP) in 2003, and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in 2004.
Leads, strengthens and supports an expanded response aimed at preventing transmission of HIV, providing care and support, reducing the vulnerability of individuals and communities to HIV/AIDS, and alleviating the impact of the epidemic.
Is present in Macedonia through the UN Theme Group on HIV/AIDS. This Theme Group coordinates AIDS-related work by diverse UN agencies in the country so as to maximize their collective impact. It consists of: UNHCR, UNICEF, UNDP, UNODC, WHO, WORLD BANK, IOM, and was established in November 1999. Since then the Theme Group has supported the country in the development, implementation and scale-up of a comprehensive AIDS strategy
Promotes the “Three ones” principles: 1. One agreed HIV/AIDS Action Framework that provides the basis for coordinating the work of all partners.
2. One National AIDS Coordinating Authority, with a broad-based multisectoral mandate
3. One agreed country-level Monitoring and Evaluation System.
Assists the country in harmonizing the diverse HIV/AIDS initiatives and helps enhancing the national leadership, civil society engagement and partnership development as key features to effective action against the epidemic.
