The event was realized in partnership with the Gender Institute at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University Ss.Cyril and Methodius in Skopje and the Academy for Audiovisual Arts ESRA. It gathered representatives of institutions, NGO’s, university students and individuals interested in issues relating to CEDAW.
The International Day of Human Rights – December 10th was specifically chosen as the date of the celebration in order to emphasize the fact that CEDAW is a Human Rights Convention and that women are entitled to enjoy their human rights equally with all others. This year’s Human Rights Day was devoted to the fight against discrimination and embracement of diversity which were also echoed in the marking of the 30th Anniversary, with focus on diversity and discrimination, as they pertain to women.
Reflections on the state of women's rights were made by institutional representatives, prominent academics and activists. In their interventions they discussed the current state of women’s rights, the importance of education and involvement of young people in the achievement of gender equality, role of men, complexities of women’s identities as well as vision for the advancement of women beyond the 30th Anniversary.
The event included a screening of a short film prepared by the students of Gender Studies and ESRA to illustrate the obstacles women face in different areas of their lives, among other portraying the struggle for women’s rights within a historic and wider social context.
The guests had the opportunity to sign CEDAW 30 Anniversary postcards and express their vision on the future of women’s rights in the country (or globally). The postcards have been addressed to different actors, calling for variety of actions on gender equality.
The event was closed by a photo exhibition prepared by the students of Gender Studies and ESRA that took the CEDAW articles as the basis to portray the diversity and contrasts between women in Macedonia and raise the awareness about their life experiences.
